What is the role of a registrar

A registrar is responsible for maintaining an up to date record of who owns securities issued by a company.

There is a legal obligation to maintain these records accurately, a fact that is enshrined in various pieces of legislation including the Companies Act 2014.

The duties of a registrar can be conducted internally, but evolving legislation, such as the Regulation on settlement and Central Securities Depositories, 2014, mean that a growing number of smaller companies are requiring the services of a CSD enabled registrar.

There are also demands to keep records updated on a more frequent basis, meaning that outsourcing this role to professional service providers or specialist registrars is becoming a necessity.
